Go-home day is such an exciting time for both you and your new furry family member! At Meadowbrook Poodles and Doodles, we love seeing our puppies head off to their forever homes. Whether you’ve chosen one of our mini poodle

puppies for sale, toy poodle puppies for sale, or one of our adorable doodle puppies for sale, today marks the beginning of a lifetime of love, companionship, and joyful memories.

To help you and your new puppy get off to the best start, here are some essential tips for this special transition period.

1. No Paws on the Ground Until 16 Weeks

Your puppy’s immune system is still developing, and they won’t be fully protected until they’ve completed their vaccination series at around 16 weeks of age.

  • Avoid letting your puppy’s paws touch public ground—this includes sidewalks, pet stores, parks, and rest areas.

  • Carry your puppy in your arms or in a carrier when outside of the home.

  • Limit contact with unfamiliar dogs until all vaccinations are complete.

This simple precaution can prevent exposure to dangerous viruses like parvovirus and keep your puppy safe during these critical first months.

2. Keep the Same Food for at Least 2 Weeks

Your puppy’s stomach is sensitive, especially during the stress of moving to a new home.

  • Continue feeding the same food we’ve been giving your puppy for at least two weeks.

  • If you choose to transition to a different food later, do so gradually over 7–10 days by mixing increasing amounts of the new food with the old.

  • Sudden diet changes can cause digestive upset, diarrhea, or even make your puppy refuse to eat.

3. Allow Time for the Adjustment Period

Go-home day is a big change. Your puppy has left their littermates, familiar smells, and our home environment for the very first time.

  • Adjustment can take up to two full weeks for your puppy to become completely comfortable in their new surroundings.

  • During this period, your puppy may seem shy, overly sleepy, extra playful, or even a little unsure—this is all normal.

  • Don’t be fooled by the first few days—you may not see your puppy’s true temperament until they’ve fully settled in and feel safe.

  • Keep their world small at first—limit their space to a puppy-proofed area or pen.

  • Offer love, gentle handling, and reassurance to help your puppy feel at home.

4. Safe Socialization Before Vaccinations Are Complete

Even though they can’t explore the ground in public yet, your puppy can still experience the world safely.

  • Invite fully vaccinated dogs you know and trust into your home for short, positive introductions.

  • Introduce your puppy to new sights, sounds, and smells from the safety of your home or your arms.

  • Begin crate training and basic commands early to set them up for long-term success.

5. Enjoy Every Moment of Puppyhood

Puppyhood goes by quickly—treasure every cuddle, silly hop, and burst of “zoomies.” Take plenty of photos and videos—you’ll be amazed at how fast they grow and change.

At Meadowbrook Poodles and Doodles, we are here for you long after go-home day.
